Binance USD market cap falls below $10B amid rising regulatory concerns
Binance USD (BUSD) market cap has fallen below $10 billion for the first time in almost two years amid a United States regulatory crackdown on its token issuer and a planned delisting from a major crypto exchange. Circle, Paxos, Bitstamp and Galaxy join Coinbase in scaling back partnerships with Silvergate Bank
Several crypto firms have announced they will scale back or outright terminate their relationship with Silvergate Bank following an announced investigation into its alleged involvement in the FTX collapse. Amid news that crypto exchange Coinbase would no longer accept or initiate payments with Silvergate, companies including stablecoin issuers Paxos and Circle and Mike Novogratz's Galaxy Digital have announced similar actions regarding their partnerships with the crypto bank. Paxos is engaged in 'constructive discussions' with SEC: Report
Stablecoin issuer Paxos was reportedly discussing the Binance USD (BUSD) stablecoin with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission following a Wells notice from the financial regulator. According to a Feb. 21 Reuters report, Paxos chief executive officer Charles Cascarilla said the firm was “engaged in constructive discussions” with the SEC and would continue to speak in private. This time, the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) ordered Paxos Trust to stop issuing Binance USD (BUSD) — a dollar-pegged stablecoin. Crypto financial services Matrixport's head of research believes the recent scrutiny of Paxos and its Binance USD (BUSD) token is not a direct attack on stablecoins themselves. Circle blew the whistle on Binance reserves to NYDFS: Report
New York State’s Department of Financial Services, or NYDFS, reportedly received a complaint from stablecoin issuer Circle regarding Binance’s reserves prior to its crackdown on BUSD. According to a Feb. 13 Bloomberg report, Circle alerted NYDFS in an autumn 2022 complaint that Binance’s reserves were insufficient to support its tokens, seemingly including stablecoin Binance USD (BUSD). Paxos to stop minting BUSD stablecoins for Binance
Blockchain infrastructure platform Paxos will halt issuance of new BUSD (BUSD) stablecoins amid the ongoing probe by the New York regulators.
