Pharma companies team up with DeSci to accelerate scientific research
Having emerged as a movement in the research community, Decentralized Science (DeSci) initiatives are progressing at a pace even big pharma cannot ignore. In fact, Pfizer is now the first pharmaceutical to vote on decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) proposals of German blockchain-based organization VitaDAO. The collaboration is part of VitaDAO's latest fundraising disclosed in late January from strategic members, including Pfizer Ventures, Shine Capital and L1 Digital, among other longevity enthusiasts. The $4.1 million raised will be used to fund longevity research projects and accelerate the spinout of VitaDAO's first biotech startups, with two more in development for 2023. "Pfizer …

The importance of open-source in computer science and software development
Open-source refers to the practice of making source code freely available to the public, allowing anyone to view, modify and distribute the code. In computer science and software development, open source is important for several reasons, as explained in the below sections. Collaboration and innovation Global collaboration and contributions to the creation of software projects are made possible by open source, leading to faster innovation and the creation of more advanced and reliable software. The creation of the Linux operating system is a prime illustration of how open source promotes cooperation and innovation. Linus Torvalds founded the open-source Linux project …

What is cyberpunk: A beginner’s guide to the sci-fi genre
Science fiction’s sub-genre, known as cyberpunk, imagines a dystopian future in which advanced technology has overtaken society and divided it into classes for the haves and the have-nots. The genre frequently examines virtual reality, hacking, artificial intelligence and how technology affects people. Cyberpunk is distinguished by its emphasis on a future society in which governments and corporations have amassed enormous power and control over people, frequently at the expense of their freedom and privacy. The genre is renowned for its grim and gloomy depictions of a world where technology has gone beyond human control and produced new kinds of exploitation …

Keith Comito is at the intersection of blockchain, longevity and decentralized science
Lifespan.io President and co-founder Keith Comito was into longevity before longevity was cool. “We started our nonprofit back in 2014,” Comito said. “Back then, few credible researchers would be caught dead saying they were working on aging. It was still kind of a scientific backwater. So, we wanted to emulate what the cancer research advocates did, starting in the ‘40s.” He said those early advocates identified the most credible research at the time and used “old-school” fundraising approaches like telethons to crowdfund for their work. They built a grassroots movement and grew their scientific expertise. Through their efforts, defeating cancer …

NFTs, Nonprofits and Longevity Intersect at Art Basel Miami
Just as Art Basel has expanded beyond its initial gallery showcases in Switzerland, where the international art fair was conceived, the pursuit of longer and more fulfilling lives has grown from the subject of science fiction novels to real, viable science. Now the evolution of art is being leveraged as the Longevity Science Foundation’s partnership with Triptych and digital artist Nikita Replyanski leveled up during Art Basel in Miami Beach. The partnership to launch a collection of nonfungible tokens (NFTs) was announced during the summer. The “Longevity Volumes” will help fund LSF research grants for longevity projects. Replyanski said he …

How crypto is playing a role in increasing healthy human lifespans
It's a question that's infatuated scientists for decades: how can we prolong life expectancy — giving humans everywhere more years of good health? This field is known as longevity science, and within this industry, experts argue care which regards ageing as a normal but treatable ailment are rare — and of the approaches available, they can only be accessed by those who are highly educated and privileged. Just some of the key tenets that govern this approach to medicine involve therapeutics, personalized medicine, predictive diagnostics and artificial intelligence. The goal is to eliminate a "one size fits all" attitude toward …

DeSci: Tech trees to fund ambitious science and tech
Have you ever played the game series Civilization, created by designer Sid Meier? Through the years, much has changed, but one of the unchanging hallmarks of the series has been the technology tree. Why has it been such a stable component of this game? Because it allows you, on one look, to get a bird’s-eye view of the technological capabilities necessary to make progress on your audacious civilizational goals. Compare this with our real civilization. If we wanted to, we could probably map the many technological capability paths that got us to where we are today. After all, our current …

DAO structure supports advancement of modern science in latest Web3 movement
While the concept of decentralized finance (DeFi) is still seeing strong growth projections, it is not the only industry showing massive potential. Following the financial use case came a host of scientists and entrepreneurs who incorporated smart contracts, tokens and other blockchain tools in their efforts to improve modern science. The movement, which focuses on the benefits of decentralized cross-border collaboration science, is now more widely known as DeSci. Originally, this movement stemmed from the need to enhance scientific funding, which was primarily set by scientists who spent half their time writing grant proposals. Consider that without funding, not only …

Decentralization is helping to shape the course of scientific research and business
New technologies may have rapid, dramatic effects on society, but they may also spread slowly and subtly. Blockchain-powered decentralized science (DeSci) is taking off after some years of gestation. Its impact is being felt not only in the rarified confines of high-tech labs but more broadly in the business world as well. Psychedelics and longevity Paul Kohlhaas, co-founder and CEO of Molecule — a platform for biotech decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs) founded in 2019 — spoke about pharmaceutical research and its funding on the Zima Red podcast in April. “We believe it could be way cheaper, if it was coordinated …
